Cleanups

All six are on by default with editor-friendly rules. Each one is documented in detail on the How it works page.

Strip direct character formattingRemoves per-run bold, italic, underline, color, size and highlight inside paragraphs that use a named style (Headings, Title, Quote…), so the style shows through. Bold/italic in Normal paragraphs is kept — authors may mean it.
Remove empty paragraphsDeletes paragraphs with no text. Paragraphs holding pictures, breaks, bookmarks, fields or list numbering are always kept, and the last paragraph of a table cell is never removed.
Normalize paragraph stylesPoints variants like “Normal (Web)” back to the document’s Normal style, and drops references to styles that do not exist in the file — unless the reference is a known Word built-in such as Heading 1.
Unify fonts to the document defaultRemoves explicit font names (Courier New, Arial, Times New Roman…) from runs so text inherits the document/theme font again. Theme font references are left untouched.
Remove manual line breaksDeletes soft line breaks inside paragraphs — the ones made by pressing Shift+Enter. Page breaks and column breaks are always kept.
Normalize spacingRemoves per-paragraph space-before/space-after and line-spacing overrides so spacing comes from the styles and theme again.

Your text is safe

The text content of your document is verified character-for-character before the download is offered.
Tables, images, headers, footers, footnotes, hyperlinks and every other file part are copied byte-for-byte.
If any check fails, the tool returns your original file unchanged and says why in the report.
The cleaned file is re-opened and re-validated before it is offered — a corrupt file is never produced.
